About us

The early development of Huntly is closely linked to the development of coal. The first eastern coal deposits opening up in 1876. Coalminers came from the west coast of the South Island and from overseas to work the newly developed mines. A settlement developed to support the growing population of coalminers. As European settlers arrived so did the settler church. St Paul's was opened on 18th February 1894.

As a church community we are deeply shaped by our founding story. We recognize that right from our beginning we are a church of settlers making a welcome place of worship and hospilatity for other settlers who are searching for a better life. That is our mission, our reason for being.
